For how long…

For long you have loved and hated,
And labored and struggled and toiled –
For how long can you fool yourself with the lie
That things would be the worse off, without you?

For how long can you look at the walls that surround you,
And say, this home is mine;
For how long can you look at the mirror
And not have a stranger stare back at you?

Try to imagine the world that you built
Just a few years after you leave –
For how long would your fingerprints remain
On the repainted, redecorated walls, after you?

You were in love with life, my friend,
And you have been steadfast in your love –
But for how long can you deny
The claim of death over you?
