The gilded road

Don’t go on that road my friend, trust me,
I have been there. But still, if you must,
Do take a friend along.

You will find the glittering road,
With its bright lights and gilded pavements,
Crowded but lonely.

There are public halls, full of pretty faces,
And handsome admirers- but you will not find
Any friend there.

There are casinos and music halls
All pretty and clean- but you hardly see
Any homes or children there.

Beware. I was, and so shall you,
Be feted and cheered – they will love
To hear you sing their songs.

It is long road, it takes ages to reach
Its farthest end; it takes time to realize
That it leads to nowhere.
