For the old time’s sake

There shall come a time, soon,
When we shall be amazed
Hearing stories of love, loyalty and faith.
Already, they are being whispered about,
Apologetically, with a sheepish grin,
Among friends.

It is difficult to speak
About goodness and sacrifice
Without sounding hollow, or
Attracting incredulity, derision.
Let hypocrisy prevail, or else,
Even these words shall die.

In the modern temple of progress
Before the God of Greed,
Let us bid for the soul of man;
Let us assign a monetary value
For humility and dignity,
For the old time’s sake.

The children are such a nuisance
With their story books of heroes
And freedom-fighters. Do find some time
To recall why they died for love,
Or what they got out of it all –
For the old time’s sake.

The poor are an embarrassment
They blot the sparkling townscape
Trample the lawns, squat on the pavements
And ruin the aesthetics.
Do find a space for them in the ghettos
For the old time’s sake.

Subscribe to the application that sends
Two lines of Shakespeare every day
To your mobile phone. Read them
Not for its beauty, but
For the fading memory of the dusty books
Of your childhood.

Hide your feelings deep in your heart
And ignore that faint voice that asks
The most uncomfortable questions
Lest you are forced to lie. Pay respect
To the tired old Gods, in their marble temples
For the old time’s sake.

It can perhaps be put in the category of thematic poetry. Good poem though one can safely say that the elements of poetry have been overshadowed by the underlying theme – which of course is not a bad thing after all! Sometimes we have to give statements through poems. In Hindi, we call it – “Ye kavita se zayada vaktavya hai !”

Absolutely. I too did not like this one, and was wondering whether to put it up at all. Another problem was trying to straight-jacket two different types of ideas into one structure. Finally I decided not to tear it because I liked some of the lines in it like –
      “Do find some time
To recall why they died for love,
Or what they got out of it all –
      For the old time’s sake.”
